THIS WEEK AT THE MOVIES

Five new movies are coming out this week in Buenos Aires, including new Burman's Dos Hermanos, an alien thriller called The Fourth Kind, French film Seraphine, Aniston and Butler's The Bounty Hunter and an updated version of 1980 musical Fame.

DOS HERMANOS (Argentina, 2010). In Spanish. Daniel Burman’s new film, based on the novel Villa Laura, by SergioDubcovsky. The conflictive relation between two siblings, Marcos and Susana, reunited at the funeral of their mother. Marcos has sacrificed his life to care for their tyrannical mother, while Susana, married with and then divorced from a wealthy socialite, refuses to acknowledge her economic and social decline. With: Graciela Borges, Antonio Gasalla and Elena Lucena, Osmar Núñez, Rita Cortese. NR.

THE FOURTH KIND (Contactos de cuarto tipo, US, 2009). In English with Spanish subtitles. Yet another thriller about alien encounters. Remember Spielberg’s Third Type? Now the Fourth Kind involves abduction and an ongoing, unsolved mystery in Alaska, where an extraordinary number of people disappear without a trace. The disappearances take place over a span of 40 years, and there are suspicions of a federal coverup. Directed by: Olatunde Osunsanmi. Written by: Olatunde Osunsanmi. With: Milla Jovovich, Will Patton, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Awolowa Odusami. Running time: 98 minutes.

SERAPHINE Biopic based on the life of French painter Séraphine de Senlis. (France, Belgium, Germany, 2009). In French and German with Spanish subtitles. Directed by: Martin Provost. Written by: Marc Abdelnour and Martin Provost. With: Yolande Moreau, Ulrich Tukur, Anne Bennent, Geneviève Mnich. Running time: 125 minutes.

THE BOUNTY HUNTER (El cazarecompensas, US, 2010). In English with Spanish subtitles. A ruthless bounty hunter is assigned the most surprising job in his life: following his ex wife, a reporter investigating a murder coverup. Both meet by chance on their respective assignments and, together, embark on a run-for-their-lives adventure. Directed by: Andy Tennant. With: Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. Running time: 110 minutes.

FAME (Fama, US, 2009). In English with Spanish subtitles. An updated version of the 1980 musical, which centered on the students of the New York Academy of Performing Arts. Directed by: Kevin Tancharoen. Written by: Aline Brosh McKenna, Allison Burnett. With: Debbie Allen, Charles S. Dutton, Kelsey Grammer. Running time: 107 minutes, and 123 minutes (extended version). NR.
